A while ago I came across The Book of Heroic Failures in a charity shop in Belfast and snapped it up for the princely sum of 29p. It tells of some of the best failures known to mankind.
One of my favourites is called "The Worst Save" (as the keeper doesn't actually save it, can it be called a save? Maybe it should be called an unsave? Or a miss?):
"This honour falls to Senhor Isadore of the Brazilian team Rio Preto who let in a goal after three seconds. From the kick off in the soccer match between Corinthians and Rio Preto at Bahia stadium, the ball was passed to Roberto Rivielino who scored instantly with a left-foot drive from the halfway line. The ball went past the ear of Senhor Irandir, while he was on his knees finishing pre-match prayers in the goalmouth."p105
Fantastic. Just goes to show, don't pray unless you're willing to act!
